The Somali is the longhaired Abyssinian - same breed, same body type, same active intelligent personality, with a flowing semi-long coat. Often called the "fox cat" for the bushy tail and ruff, the Somali is one of the most beautiful pedigreed cats.
History & Origins
Longhaired kittens appeared occasionally in Abyssinian litters. American breeder Evelyn Mague developed them as a separate breed in the 1970s. CFA recognition came in 1978.
Appearance
Medium-sized, athletic, fox-like. 3-5 kg.
- Coat: medium-long, soft, ticked. Heavy ruff and plumed tail.
- Colour: ruddy (warm reddish-brown), red (sorrel), blue, fawn, silver variants.
- Eyes: large, almond, gold or green.
- Body: lithe, athletic.
Temperament & Character
Identical to Abyssinian: active, curious, affectionate, intelligent. Bonds with family; needs significant enrichment.
Care
Coat & Grooming
The semi-long single-layered coat is moderate maintenance: 2-3 times weekly brushing.
Health & Lifespan
11-16 years. Same as Abyssinian: PK deficiency, PRA, renal amyloidosis.
Pros & Cons
Pros: beautiful, active, intelligent. Cons: enormous exercise needs; cannot tolerate being alone.
