Why Pawholt exists.

Most pet content online is recycled fluff. Pawholt is the site we wished existed when we first brought home a dog - and then a cat - and started Googling everything.

The short version

Pawholt is run by the Fjords Team - a small independent team of longtime pet owners. We are not vets, and we don't pretend to be. We're the kind of people who read veterinary papers when a dog limps, check five sources before buying flea meds, and got tired of pet-care articles that say everything and nothing at the same time.

One more thing worth being upfront about: this site covers dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and exotics. Nobody is personally an expert in all of those - so we don't claim to be. Every guide is desk-researched from specialist sources (veterinary references, species care sheets, breeder and keeper communities), cross-checked, and written in plain language. Where health is involved, the answer always ends the same way: ask your vet.

The plan: cover every common breed and every product category a real owner actually buys. Honest pros and cons, real prices, and a clear answer to the question "would we buy this for our own pets?"

How it started

When the first dog arrived, we spent weeks reading guides that all said the same things and none of them helped. Half the "best of" lists were obvious affiliate placements with no real opinion behind them. The other half were stock-photo wellness blogs that couldn't tell you whether a $40 brush was different from a $12 one.

So we started keeping notes. Which kibble actually fixed loose stools. Which harness didn't choke a wide-chested dog. Which insurance covered the things we actually got billed for. After two years of notes there was enough material for a real site - so here it is.

What you'll find here

  • 340+ breed and species guides - dogs, cats, small mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, exotic. History, temperament, care, health, training, honest pros and cons.
  • 50+ buyer guides - insurance, food, supplements, gear, training. Updated when prices and products change.
  • No fluff sections - no "10 reasons your dog is your best friend" articles. If a topic doesn't need 2000 words, it doesn't get 2000 words.

Editorial principles

  • Independent. No brand ever pays for placement. Rankings are based on coverage, claims experience, real-world testing, and value.
  • Sourced where it matters. Health, medication, and emergency content is researched against published veterinary sources (AVMA, ASPCA, veterinary-school resources) - and where it counts, we say "ask your vet" instead of pretending to replace one. We don't claim vet review we haven't had.
  • Affiliate-honest. Some links earn us a commission - full disclosure on every page. Commission rate does not influence rankings.
  • Updated, not abandoned. Pet products and insurance plans change. We update articles, not just stamp a fresh date on them.

How we make money

Pawholt is reader-supported. If you click an Amazon link and end up buying, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's it. No display ads, no sponsored posts, no email-list selling. If the affiliate model ever conflicts with honesty, honesty wins.

Who's behind it

The Fjords Team - a small independent team of pet owners who research, write, and fact-check everything on the site. We keep individual names quiet because the goal is for the content to be useful, not for the brand to be about us. If you want to reach us, email hello@pawholt.com - real person on the other end.

What's next

  • Every breed guide gets its own photo set (~10 images per breed)
  • Every product roundup gets a hero image
  • YouTube channel with breed deep-dives (first guides are live)
