The practical difference is range: the Poodle comes in three sizes with three quite different exercise needs, so the comparison depends entirely on which Poodle you mean. The Bichon averages 14-15 years on AKC figures, and a 2024 UK study found 12.5. The AKC gives all three Poodle sizes 10-18 years, so on paper the two overlap. The Bichon's issues are allergies, dental disease, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and Legg-Calve-Perthes. Standard Poodles add bloat, which the smaller varieties do not carry in the same way. Dental care matters in both.
What each one asks of a normal week
The Royal Kennel Club puts the Bichon at up to 30 minutes of exercise a day and every Poodle size at up to an hour. All of them are clever and want training as much as walking. Coat upkeep is the shared tax: both breeds need a groomer every few weeks, and both profiles rule out owners unwilling to budget for it.
