The Betta (Betta splendens) is one of the most popular and most mis-housed aquarium fish. Often sold in tiny cups and bowls, the Betta is actually a tropical fish requiring a heated filtered tank β and it lives 3β5 years with proper care, compared to the typical 6 months in bowls.
Native to Thailand and surrounding regions. Lives in shallow standing water β rice paddies, slow streams. Males are intensely territorial and fight to the death in the wild; the species is bred for fighting in Thailand for centuries.
Adults 6β8 cm length. Males: long flowing fins in brilliant colours β red, blue, white, multicolour, marble, koi. Females: shorter fins, less dramatic colours.
Tail varieties: veiltail, crowntail, halfmoon, plakat, double tail, dumbo (ear-fin), and many more.
Males are aggressive to other males β strict no β and often to females except during brief breeding. Avoid:
Acceptable tankmates: small peaceful fish (Corydoras, Otocinclus, Neon Tetras in some cases), nerite snails, shrimp (some Bettas eat shrimp).
Female Bettas can sometimes live in groups ("sororities") but require careful setup.
Minimum: 20 L (5 gallon) for one Betta. This is the modern standard β old bowls and "Betta cups" are inadequate.
Provide:
Carnivorous. Quality Betta pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia. Feed small portions 1β2 times daily.
3β5 years.
Common concerns:
Pros: brilliant colours, small tank suitable, interactive personality, long-finned beauty. Cons: widely mis-housed in pet shops, short lifespan if poorly kept, aggressive with most tankmates.
Can Bettas live in bowls? Modern best practice is no. 20 L minimum tank with heater and filter. Bowls produce 6-month deaths instead of 3β5 year lives.
Can two males live together? Never. They will fight, often to death.
Can a Betta live with a female? Briefly for breeding. Otherwise no β males may injure or kill females.
How long do they live? 3β5 years in proper tanks; 6 months in bowls.
Can they breathe air? Yes β Bettas have a labyrinth organ allowing surface breathing. This is why they survive (briefly) in oxygen-poor cups. It is not a substitute for proper housing.

"Bettas are sold in tiny plastic cups and dismissed as throwaway pets. They are not. Bettas are intelligent labyrinth fish that recognise their owners, build bubble nests, and live 3β5 years in proper tanks. Today: the truth about betta care."
"Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) are native to slow-moving rice paddies and ponds of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. They are labyrinth fish β possessing a special organ that lets them breathe atmospheric air at the surface. This adaptation allows survival in low-oxygen water. Selectively bred for centuries for fin shape and colour. Dozens of varieties exist."
"Tank minimum: 20 litres for a single betta. 30+ litres preferred. Filtration: gentle. Sponge filter or low-flow internal. Heater: 24β27Β°C β bettas are tropical and die in cold water. Substrate: gravel or sand. Plants: real or fake β bettas like dense cover and resting places. Lid: bettas jump."
"Carnivore. Quality betta pellets β daily, small portion. Frozen or live: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia β 2β3 times weekly. Skip flake food alone."
"Male bettas: strictly solo. Two males fight. Female bettas: can be housed in 'sororities' of 5+ in larger tanks (75+ litres) but only with experienced management. Tank mates for solo males: cautious selection. Snails, peaceful shrimp, small slow-bodied tetras in larger tanks. Never anything with long fins or aggressive temperament."
"Lifespan 3β5 years. Fin rot from poor water quality. Ich (white spot). Velvet disease. Swim bladder issues. Find an aquatic vet."
"Mistake one: cup or bowl. Cold, dirty, kills the fish. How to avoid: 20+ litre heated filtered tank. Mistake two: housing two males. Fight to death. How to avoid: one male per tank. Mistake three: long-finned tank mates. Cause fin nipping in both directions. How to avoid: short-finned peaceful species or solo."
"Checklist: 20+ litre heated filtered tank. Quality diet. Solo or carefully chosen tank mates. Aquatic vet identified. 3-5 year commitment. Tick four β the betta is wonderful."
