The Discus (Symphysodon species) is the "king of the aquarium" β a disc-shaped, brilliantly coloured cichlid considered one of the most beautiful freshwater fish. Discus are also one of the most challenging β requiring very soft, very warm, immaculately clean water and large groups for proper behaviour.
Native to the Amazon basin in slow-moving blackwater rivers. Three species (S. aequifasciatus, S. discus, S. tarzoo) plus many captive-bred strains.
Adults 15β20 cm body length, disc-shaped. Brilliant patterns and colours: red turquoise, blue diamond, pigeon blood, snake skin, leopard, marlboro, and dozens more.
Peaceful cichlids. Best in groups of 6+ β solo Discus are stressed and short-lived. Pairs and trios often produce dominance issues; large groups are most stable.
Tankmates: only fish that tolerate the high temperatures and soft water Discus require. Cardinal Tetras (often), Sterbai Corydoras, peaceful South American fish.
Minimum: 200 L (55 gallon) for a group of 4β6. Tall tank preferred.
Heavy filtration, very clean water, large weekly water changes (50%+).
Carnivore. Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, beefheart (controversial), quality Discus pellets, blackworms. Feed 2β3 times daily; juveniles more often.
10β15 years.
Common concerns:
Pros: stunning appearance, intelligent, long-lived, social. Cons: demanding water quality, expensive setup, sensitive to disease, not for beginners.
Are Discus for beginners? No. Experienced fishkeepers who can maintain soft warm water with rigorous cleaning.
How big do they get? 15β20 cm body diameter.
How long do they live? 10β15 years with careful care.
Cost? Quality Discus often β¬40ββ¬200+ per fish. Setup is substantial.
Are they worth the trouble? For dedicated keepers, yes. Discus are widely considered the pinnacle of freshwater fishkeeping.

"Discus are the king of the freshwater aquarium β large, brilliantly coloured Amazonian cichlids that require expert-level care, premium diets, and pristine warm soft water. They are not beginner fish. They are demanding, expensive, and can be heartbreakingly easy to kill with wrong water. Today: complete discus care."
"Discus (Symphysodon) are South American cichlids from the Amazon basin, native to soft acidic blackwater. Captive bred for over fifty years. Hundreds of colour strains exist. Reach 15β20 cm. Lifespan 10β15 years."
"Tank minimum: 300 litres for a group. Heater: 27β30Β°C β warmer than most tropicals. Soft slightly acidic water (pH 6.0β6.8) essential. Filtration: powerful with frequent water changes. Minimal substrate or sand. Driftwood and dim lighting."
"High-quality discus pellets. Frozen: bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms. Beefheart mixes (controversial β many breeders use, many do not). Multiple small feedings daily."
"Discus are social. Groups of 6+ reduce aggression. Tank mates: cardinal tetras (classic), corydoras (warmth-tolerant species), peaceful loricariids."
"Lifespan 10β15 years. Hexamita (hole-in-the-head) β common. Gill flukes. Extreme stress sensitivity β water quality, temperature changes, aggressive tank mates all cause illness. Find an aquatic vet experienced with cichlids."
"Mistake one: starting with discus as first fish. Too demanding. How to avoid: keep simpler community fish for 2+ years first. Mistake two: tap water without preparation. Causes stress. How to avoid: RO water with remineralisation. Mistake three: small groups. Causes aggression. How to avoid: 6+."
"Checklist: Experienced fish keeper. 300+ litre tank with warm soft water capability. Time for daily water changes. Premium diet budget. 10-15 year commitment. Tick four β discus may suit you. Otherwise β please gain experience with easier species first."
