The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is the iconic small community fish β a tiny silvery fish with brilliant electric blue and red horizontal stripes. Schooling, peaceful, and beautiful, Neons have decorated home aquariums since the 1930s.
Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America. Lives in slow-moving forest streams with tannin-stained water (blackwater).
Adults 3β4 cm length. Blue stripe along upper body and red stripe along lower rear. Silvery underside.
Peaceful schooling fish. Must be kept in groups of 6+ minimum, 10β15 preferred. Single or pair-housed Neons become stressed and short-lived.
Excellent in community tanks with other small peaceful species. Avoid with large fish (Angelfish eat adult Neons).
Minimum: 60 L (15 gallon) for a school of 6β10.
Soft water, gentle current, planted tank with dim lighting suits them best.
Quality micro pellets, flake, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp. Feed small portions 1β2 times daily.
5β8 years (commonly 2β3 in pet shop conditions).
Common concerns:
Pros: brilliant colours, peaceful schooling, attractive in planted tanks. Cons: mass-bred stock often fragile; Neon Tetra disease; sensitive to water quality.
How many do I need? Minimum 6, ideally 10β15. Solo Neons fade and die.
Neon vs Cardinal Tetra? Cardinal has red running the full length of body; Neon has red only the rear half. Cardinals are slightly larger and often hardier; Neons are more readily available.
How long do they live? 5β8 years with good care; commonly 2β3 in mass-market conditions.
Beginner fish? After tank is cycled (4β6 weeks). Sensitive to ammonia/nitrite.

"Neon tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) are native to the soft, acidic, blackwater tributaries of the Amazon basin. Wild fish prefer cooler temperatures than many tropical tanks β 20β25Β°C suits them well. Captive bred in massive numbers globally. Quality varies enormously."
"Tank minimum: 60 litres for a school. Filtration: gentle. Heater: 22β25Β°C. Substrate: dark. Plants: dense planting. Soft slightly acidic water preferred (pH 6.0β7.0)."
"Small-particle food β crushed flake, micro pellets, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia."
"Neon tetras are obligate schoolers. Minimum group 8, ideally 12+. Solo or pairs cause severe stress. Peaceful community fish. Tank mates: small peaceful tropicals β corydoras, small rasboras, dwarf shrimp, peaceful gouramis."
"Lifespan 5β10 years in proper tanks. Neon Tetra Disease (Pleistophora microsporidiosis) β incurable. Quarantine new fish. Ich. Stress from inadequate schools or aggressive tank mates."
"Mistake one: small school. Causes stress. How to avoid: 8+ minimum. Mistake two: aggressive tank mates. Eat neons. How to avoid: peaceful community only. Mistake three: uncycled tank. Common cause of early death. How to avoid: cycle for 4β6 weeks before introducing neons."
"Checklist: 60+ litre tank, cycled. Heater and filter. Plan for school of 8+. Aquatic vet identified. 5-10 year commitment. Tick four β neons are wonderful."
