The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the oldest domesticated fish in the world β selectively bred in China for over 1,000 years from the wild Prussian carp. Despite the pet-shop image of goldfish in bowls, the species grows to 15β35 cm depending on type and lives 10β20+ years when properly kept.
Wild Prussian carp native to East Asia. Domestic goldfish exist in two broad categories:
Common: orange, white, yellow, black, calico. Slim body 25β35 cm. Fancy: rounded body, often double tails, "wen" growths (hood), telescoping eyes. Up to 20 cm.
Strong filtration β goldfish produce enormous waste.
The "goldfish in a bowl" image is the cause of countless premature deaths. Bowls are inhumane housing.
Omnivore. Quality goldfish pellets, sinking gel food, blanched vegetables (peas help with swim bladder issues), occasional bloodworms.
10β20+ years (some over 40).
Common concerns:
Pros: long-lived, hardy, colourful, peaceful. Cons: very high waste production; large adult size; bowls and small tanks are inadequate.
Can goldfish live in bowls? No. They require filtered tanks. Bowls cause early death.
How big do they get? Common: 25β35 cm. Fancy: 15β20 cm. Both larger than pet shops suggest.
How long do they live? 10β20+ years properly kept; documented over 40.
Pond or tank? Common varieties thrive in outdoor ponds. Fancy varieties usually need indoor tanks.
Cold water or tropical? Coldwater β 18β22Β°C. Don't heat goldfish tanks above 24Β°C.

"Goldfish are sold as toys. They are not. Properly kept goldfish live 20β30 years, grow to 20β30 cm, and require large tanks or ponds. Bowl-kept goldfish die within months. Today: the truth about goldfish."
"Goldfish (Carassius auratus) are domesticated from wild Asian carp, with documented selective breeding in China going back to the Tang Dynasty (618β907 AD). Two main types: Single-tail (common goldfish, comet, shubunkin) β hardy, pond-suitable, reach 30+ cm. Fancy (oranda, ranchu, ryukin, telescope, fantail, bubble eye) β round-bodied, slower, more delicate. 15β20 cm. Both are coldwater. Neither belongs in a bowl."
"Single-tails: pond, or 200+ litre tank per fish. Fancies: 75 litres per fish minimum, 150+ for a pair. Filtration: oversized β twice the rated tank size. Goldfish are extremely high-waste. Substrate: large smooth gravel or bare bottom (no small gravel β choking risk). Temperature: 18β22Β°C. No heater. Decor: smooth β no sharp edges (fancies bump into things). Live plants optional (goldfish eat them)."
"Quality goldfish pellets β sinking preferred for fancies. Daily greens: blanched peas, lettuce, spinach, courgette. Occasional bloodworm or brine shrimp. Avoid: bread, flakes only, overfeeding."
"Never mix single-tail with fancy. Single-tails are faster swimmers and out-compete fancies for food. Single-tails do best in outdoor ponds. Fancies thrive only in indoor tanks with careful care."
"Lifespan 20β30 years with proper care. Swim bladder disease β common in fancies. Often diet-related. Ammonia poisoning from under-filtered tanks. Ich (white spot disease) β treatable. Find an aquatic vet."
"Mistake one: bowl or tiny tank. Kills the fish. How to avoid: 75β200+ litres per fish. Mistake two: mixing single-tails and fancies. How to avoid: keep types separate. Mistake three: under-filtering. How to avoid: oversized filtration."
"Checklist: Large tank or pond. Oversized filtration. 20-30 year commitment. Quality diet plan. Aquatic vet identified. Tick four β a goldfish setup is wonderful. Otherwise β please choose a small tropical species instead."
