The Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus species) is a small armoured catfish from South America, famous for algae-eating ability and the distinctive whisker-like "bristles" on the face of mature males. Among the most popular freshwater algae eaters β unlike the much larger Common Pleco which grows to 50+ cm.
Several species in the Ancistrus genus. South America. Lives in rocky riverine habitats with strong flow.
Adults 12β15 cm length. Olive-brown body with light speckles. Males develop branching bristles on the face at maturity; females have shorter, less pronounced bristles.
Mutations: albino, lemon, longfin, common types.
Peaceful and shy. Excellent in community tanks. Often nocturnal.
Minimum: 110 L (30 gallon) for one. Larger preferred.
Driftwood essential β Bristlenose Plecos require wood for digestion and gnaw on it regularly.
Omnivore with strong algae-eating habit. Don't rely on algae alone β supplement with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach, peas), occasional protein (bloodworms).
10β15 years.
Common concerns:
Pros: great algae eater, small adult size (unlike Common Pleco), peaceful, long-lived. Cons: nocturnal β less visible during day; still requires proper feeding.
Bristlenose vs Common Pleco? Bristlenose stays small (12β15 cm). Common Pleco grows to 50+ cm β most tanks cannot house adults. Buy only Bristlenose for normal aquariums.
Will they keep my tank clean? Help with algae but not a cleanup crew alone. Tank maintenance is still required.
How long do they live? 10β15 years.
Are they nocturnal? Mostly. Active at dusk and night; hide during the day.

"Pet shops sell algae-eating plecos that grow to 60 cm. Most home aquariums cannot house them. The right small pleco is the bristlenose β 10β15 cm at adult size, hardy, and an excellent algae eater. Today: complete bristlenose pleco care."
"Bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus): 10β15 cm adult, hardy, suitable for most home tanks. Common pleco (Hypostomus or Pterygoplichthys): 40β60 cm adult, requires very large tanks, often abandoned. Always confirm species at purchase. 'Pleco' in a pet shop tank could be either."
"Tank minimum: 100 litres for one bristlenose. Driftwood essential β bristlenose rasp wood as part of digestion. Hides β caves, PVC tubes. Sand or smooth gravel. Heater: 22β28Β°C. Strong filtration β plecos are messy."
"Algae wafers daily. Vegetables: blanched courgette, cucumber, peas. Occasional protein: bloodworms, shrimp pellets. Driftwood for fibre. Algae in the tank alone is not enough."
"Bristlenose males are territorial. Solo or one male with multiple females. Compatible with most peaceful community fish."
"Lifespan 5β10 years. Bloating from inappropriate diet. Ich. Internal parasites in wild-caught individuals. Find an aquatic vet."
"Mistake one: buying common pleco by mistake. Outgrows the tank. How to avoid: confirm bristlenose by name and size. Mistake two: no driftwood. Digestive issues. How to avoid: always provide. Mistake three: assuming algae is enough food. Starvation. How to avoid: provide wafers and vegetables."
"Checklist: 100+ litre tank. Driftwood and hides. Algae wafers and vegetable diet. Strong filtration. 5-10 year commitment. Tick four β bristlenose plecos are excellent."
