The Ragamuffin is a large, plush, longhaired cat closely related to the Ragdoll β created in 1994 when a group of Ragdoll breeders broke away from the founding registry to expand colour options and broaden the gene pool. The breed shares the Ragdoll's docile temperament with a wider colour palette and a more substantial build.
The split from Ragdoll occurred over trademark and registry disputes in 1994. Breeders outcrossed to Persians, domestic longhairs, and Himalayans to expand genetic diversity. CFA recognition came in 2011.
Large, plush. Adults weigh 4.5β9 kg (10β20 lb). Slow-maturing β full size by age 4.
Docile, sweet, affectionate. The Ragamuffin shares the Ragdoll's tendency to go limp when held. Excellent with children and other pets. Not a defensive cat β strictly indoor.
2β3 times weekly brushing. Less matting than Persians thanks to plush single-layered coat.
12β16 years.
Pros: docile, family-tolerant, broader colour range than Ragdoll. Cons: large; strictly indoor; HCM/PKD risks.
Ragamuffin vs Ragdoll? Very similar in temperament. Ragamuffin has broader colour range, slightly heavier build, and walnut-shaped eyes (Ragdoll has only blue oval eyes). Ragamuffin lacks the strict colour standards of Ragdoll.
Are they good with kids? Excellent.
Are they hypoallergenic? No.

"Imagine a Ragdoll, but in any colour, with a slightly heavier body, and the same gentle floppy nature. That is the Ragamuffin. Today: the breed origin, the temperament, care, health, and whether the Ragamuffin is your cat."
"In 1994, a group of Ragdoll breeders separated from the IRCA (the strict Ragdoll registry) over breeding policies. They renamed their cats Ragamuffin and developed the breed independently. The Ragamuffin standard allows all colours and patterns (Ragdolls are limited to pointed colours), accepts a slightly heavier body, and permits outcrossing to non-pointed domestic cats and Persians. CFA recognised the Ragamuffin in 2003. The breed shares the Ragdoll's gentle floppy temperament."
"Ragamuffins are gentle, affectionate, calm, trusting, and people-focused. They go floppy when picked up (the 'rag-' trait). Voice is soft. Bonding is family-wide. Energy is low to moderate. With other animals β excellent. Children β wonderful."
"Coat is semi-long, plush, rabbit-like. Twice-weekly comb. Bath every two or three months. Nails fortnightly. Teeth daily. Enrichment: moderate cat tree, daily play. Indoor only β trusting nature makes outdoor life dangerous."
"Lifespan twelve to sixteen years. Health concerns: HCM. Annual cardiac ultrasound from age three. PKD. DNA test. Obesity. Measured portions essential β large cats hide weight gain. Otherwise generally robust."
"Ragamuffins are cooperative but not eager performers. Targets: name, sit, accepting handling, harness wear. Litter solved by the breeder. Scratching: sturdy sisal posts. Handling tolerance is excellent."
"Mistake one: outdoor freedom. Trusting cats get stolen or hit. How to avoid: indoor only or catio. Mistake two: overfeeding. Large frames hide weight. How to avoid: measured portions. Mistake three: skipping HCM and PKD testing. How to avoid: tested breeders only."
"Checklist: Calm gentle giant cat. You can manage twice-weekly grooming. Indoor home. Family-friendly breed. You want a cuddly lap cat. Tick four β the Ragamuffin is wonderful."
