Overview

"Conure" is a broad category of small-to-medium South American parrots known for vibrant colours and outsized personalities. The Green-cheeked Conure is the most popular small species; the Sun Conure is the brilliantly coloured (but extremely loud) larger relative. Both share intelligence, sociability, and a love of mischief.

Natural History & Origin

Conures are native to the forests, savannas, and grasslands of South America. The umbrella term covers several genera (Pyrrhura, Aratinga, Eupsittula, others) β€” over 100 species total. Many are now endangered in the wild.

Common pet species:

  • Green-cheeked Conure β€” small, quieter, popular.
  • Sun Conure β€” brilliant orange/yellow, very loud.
  • Jenday Conure.
  • Nanday Conure.
  • Blue-crowned Conure β€” Paulie the bird.

Appearance

Size varies by species: Green-cheek 60 g and 26 cm; Sun Conure 110 g and 30 cm.

Colours: green is common base, with face/head colour variations. Many mutations available.

Temperament & Noise

Affectionate, playful, intelligent, often nippy. Conures bond intensely with family and demand interaction.

Noise varies dramatically:

  • Green-cheeked Conure: moderate, manageable for apartments.
  • Sun Conure: extremely loud β€” often described as having the loudest scream of any common pet bird relative to size. Not for apartments.

Conures love to bathe β€” many enjoy shower time and play in water.

Housing & Flight

Minimum cage: 75 Γ— 60 Γ— 90 cm (larger species need more).

Provide:

  • Many toys (heavy chewers).
  • Multiple perches.
  • Daily out-of-cage flight time.
  • Foraging puzzles.

Diet

  • Pellets as base (60%).
  • Fresh vegetables daily.
  • Sprouted seeds as enrichment.
  • Limited fruit.

Health & Lifespan

15–25 years (Sun Conures up to 30).

Common concerns:

  • Conure Bleeding Syndrome β€” vitamin K deficiency; treatable.
  • Beak and feather disease.
  • Aspergillosis.
  • Self-mutilation from stress.

Social Needs

Either pair or significant daily human interaction. Most conures do well as single birds with adequate attention.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Brilliant colours.
  • Strong bonded personality.
  • Trainable, playful, "clown of the parrots."
  • Manageable size for parrots.

Cons:

  • Sun Conures extremely loud.
  • Nippy.
  • 20-30 year commitment.
  • Demanding of attention.

Best Suited For

  • Households accepting long parrot commitment.
  • Active families wanting interactive parrot.
  • Detached homes (especially for Sun Conures).

Not suited for apartment dwellers with shared walls (Sun Conures), working households without coverage.

00:00–01:00 INTRO HOOK

"Conures are mid-sized parrots from the Americas. Brilliant colours, big personalities, and famous loud calls. They live 20–30 years, demand significant interaction, and bond fiercely with their humans. Today: complete conure ownership."

01:00–02:30 THE CONURE GENERA

"Conures are not a single species β€” the name covers parrots in several genera including Pyrrhura, Aratinga, and Eupsittula. Most popular pet conures: Sun conure β€” vivid yellow-orange. Very loud. Green-cheek conure β€” small, quieter, the most beginner-friendly conure. Jenday conure β€” colourful, vocal. Nanday conure β€” black-headed, vocal. Crimson-bellied conure β€” colourful and quieter. Choose the species before the bird. Sound levels vary dramatically."

02:30–04:00 SETUP: LARGE CAGE, LOTS OF TOYS

"Cage minimum: 75 Γ— 60 Γ— 90 cm for one. Larger always better. Bar spacing: 1.5–2.0 cm. Multiple perches, toys, foraging items. Out-of-cage time: 3–4 hours daily. Temperature: 18–26Β°C."

04:00–05:30 DIET: PELLETS, VEGETABLES, SPROUTS

"Base: 60–70% pellets. Vegetables: 20–30% β€” leafy greens, capsicum, broccoli, carrot. Sprouted seeds: nutritious supplement. Small amount of fruit. Never: avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, salt."

05:30–07:00 SOCIAL AND SOUND

"Conures are flock birds. They thrive in pairs or with significant daily human time. Sun and Jenday conures produce calls measurable above 120 dB β€” physically painful for human ears at close range. Green-cheek and pyrrhura conures are much quieter β€” under 80 dB. Choose species for your living situation. Apartments β€” green-cheek only."

07:00–08:30 HEALTH: CONURE BLEEDING SYNDROME

"Lifespan 20–30 years. Conure bleeding syndrome β€” vitamin K deficiency disorder. Manage with diet. PBFD virus. Polyomavirus. Fatty liver. Find an avian vet."

08:30–10:00 3 BIGGEST MISTAKES NEW OWNERS MAKE

"Mistake one: choosing wrong species for noise tolerance. How to avoid: meet adult birds before buying. Mistake two: undersized cage. How to avoid: 75Γ—60Γ—90 minimum. Mistake three: ignoring 20+ year commitment. How to avoid: realistic life planning."
