Wikipedia's article, citing the DK Dog Encyclopedia, says breeders in Australia and the United States began crossing Golden Retrievers with Poodles widely in the 1990s, at first only with Standard Poodles; smaller Poodles came later to make smaller dogs. The name is built on "Labradoodle".
Appearance
Wikipedia gives the standard Goldendoodle 23-36 kg (51-80 lb) at 51-64 cm; smaller Goldendoodles come from Miniature and Toy Poodle parents (sizes below). The teddy-bear look comes from a straight, wavy or curly coat in cream, red, black, gold, apricot, brown or white, and a retriever face. Typical size: Medium-large, 23-36 kg for the standard. Coat: Straight, wavy or curly; shedding varies.
The Royal Kennel Club (UK) standard gives the Golden Retriever a height of 56-61 cm for dogs and 51-56 cm for bitches and a coat that is "flat or wavy with good feathering" over a dense, water-resisting undercoat. Poodles bring a profuse, dense, curly coat and three sizes: over 38 cm for the Standard, between 28 and 38 cm for the Miniature and under 28 cm for the Toy. The cross can carry any mix of the two coats.
Mini, Medium and Standard Goldendoodles
With no breed standard, size names are a breeder convention, and each size goes back to the size of the Poodle parent (Wikipedia). The Goldendoodle Association of North America (GANA), a breed club for the cross, sorts adult dogs into four sizes by height at the withers:
- Petite: below 14 in (about 35 cm), typically 25 lb (11 kg) or less
- Miniature: 14-17 in (35-42 cm), typically 26-35 lb (12-16 kg)
- Medium: 17-21 in (43-52 cm), typically 36-50 lb (16-23 kg)
- Standard: over 21 in (53-63 cm), typically 51 lb (23 kg) or more
GANA has no "micro" or "toy" class: its smallest is Petite. The size class is settled only at adulthood: GANA calls a breeder's estimate for a puppy "an educated guess", and the grown dog can come out larger or smaller.
Temperament & Character
Gentle, affectionate, patient - the closest thing to a guaranteed-sweet family dog the designer world offers. They love everyone, need people badly, and can develop separation anxiety in empty-house households.
Behaviour has been measured. A 2019 study of C-BARQ questionnaires from 5,141 owners compared first-generation Goldendoodles with Golden Retrievers and Standard and Miniature Poodles. Most scores fell between the parent breeds, but the Goldendoodle differed from one or more parents in dog rivalry, dog-directed aggression, dog-directed fear and stranger-directed fear. The Labradoodle in the same study differed in dog rivalry only.
Care
Solid daily exercise plus the standard doodle grooming contract: brushing several times weekly, professional clips every 6-8 weeks, ear-cleaning (floppy + hairy = infection-prone). Matting behind ears and harness lines is the classic failure.
Health & Lifespan
There are no lifespan data for the Goldendoodle itself, only the parent breeds' AKC figures in the overview.
Goldendoodles turn up in several veterinary studies. In an online survey covering 838 dogs with megaesophagus (an enlarged, slack oesophagus), "goldendoodles" were among the breeds most often linked to the congenital form. UK primary-care records followed from 2014 to 2018 gave the Goldendoodle 2.63 times the odds of tick infestation of non-designer crossbreeds, one of the highest breed figures in that study. A 2025 multi-centre report on patent ductus arteriosus, a congenital heart defect, in Standard Poodles and their crosses included 9 Goldendoodles among its 30 dogs.
The parents' lists, as the AKC gives them: Golden Retriever breeders screen for hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions (juvenile cataracts, pigmentary uveitis, progressive retinal atrophy) and subvalvular aortic stenosis, and the club adds an NCL5 DNA test; Standard Poodle breeders test hips, eyes, thyroid, NEwS and von Willebrand disease. Mini or standard?
Minis (Miniature Poodle parent) fit apartments and cost less to groom and feed; standards are sturdier for rough-and-tumble families. Temperament is similar - size the dog to your space.
How big does a mini Goldendoodle get?
GANA's Miniature class is 14-17 inches at the withers and typically 26-35 lb; a Petite is under 14 inches and typically 25 lb or less. Wikipedia's figure for the miniature is up to 20 inches and 15-35 lb, so check how a breeder defines "mini".
Is there a micro Goldendoodle?
Breeders sell dogs under that name. GANA's size list stops at Petite, below 14 inches. A puppy's final size is an estimate until it is grown.
What coat will my puppy have?
Wikipedia names three main coat types: straight, wavy and curly. Coat, like size, varies with the generation and the Poodle parent (Wikipedia), so a puppy's coat is not certain; our home grooming guide covers brushing between salon visits.
Do they really not shed?
Some barely shed, some shed plenty - it's genetics, not marketing. F1b (back-crossed to Poodle) skews lower-shed but needs even more grooming.
